Featuring Interview with Joan Holman and Other "Top Internet Marketers"
Improve Your Web Site

An article by Jesse Burst appeared on the ZD Net web site titled "Seven Deadly Web Site Sins (And Why You Must Avoid Them at All Costs)".
I concur with him on several of these "sins" especially:
1) Browser-specific sites which demand a specific browser and which may also require you to download plug-ins
2) No contact information on corporate sites- this includes no phone number, no address, no customer service contacts (although I do have some clients who do not want customers calling them or e-mailing them directly because they have a distributor network they want customers to use)
3) The use of frames - I admit that frames usually drive me crazy. They create a patchwork effect on computer screens. Unless the person on your web site knows some tricks for printing from frames (and most don't) often your web site cannot be printed and kept for future reference.
Other things that really are problematic on web sites are the extensive use of reverse type (which is hard to read on a computer screen and which prints out blank) and the use of meaningless animations which just end up being distracting.
Don't worry about bells and whistles so much as content. Content is king and remember that you want to have a web site that is easy to use for individuals who are using earlier versions of browsers and slower modem speeds. Design your site for the lowest common denominator of Internet user.
PLEASE NOTE: If you already have a web site, I am available as a consultant to analyze your web site and make suggestions for improvements. If you do not have a web site yet, I can develop one that incorporates design and content geared to the culture and constraints of the Internet. People go to the Internet for information so content is critical.
