Understand the Impact of the Canadian ELD Mandate

Canadian fleet specialists may have heard about changes on the horizon for electronic logging devices (ELD), but as of June 12, 2021, the National Safety Council’s (NSC) ELD mandates are officially in full swing. These new changes can impact the way your drivers and vehicles operate, and will require a look at how you approach your fleet moving forward.

Let’s break down the ELD mandate.

The Canadian ELD Mandate was developed by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators to regulate both hours of service and the use of electric logging devices in commercial vehicles. This year, the mandate was revised to have several new specifications for drivers and fleet operators. Those changes include:

  • The reporting of both off-duty and on-duty, as well as daily driving times, by truck and commercial bus drivers through a certified ELD
  • The soft launch of revisions which went into effect on June 12, 2021
  • Required deployment of training and education for drivers expected to present this information while on the road

This goes hand-in-hand with 16 NSC standards that must be followed by commercial drivers and fleet specialists handling the licensing of commercial vehicles. These NSC-issued standards are:

As COVID-19 continues to impact the mobility industry– through shipping delays, parts shortages, and a lack of available drivers and vendors– the government has issued a one-year grace period starting on June 12, 2021 regarding penalties and legal enforcement of these policies. There are also delays in delivering certified ELD technology, making this grace period even more important.

This gives you time to connect with our specialists to devise your customized ELD strategy. Our end-to-end business management services will give you a comprehensive look at your fleet to determine the decisions you need to make around ELD, including:

  • The management of certified ELD tools
  • Extended driver training and licensing
  • Administrative changes
  • Facility improvements for vehicles
  • Safety policy revisions
