Joan Holman Gives Advice to Students
Joan Holman's speech to Graceland University students "Incinerate Old Self-Expectations and Accelerate New Possibilities" focused on the psychological and spiritual aspects of success. She said that it is important to have humility, to be okay with being imperfect and to be able to laugh at oneself. She also stated that each person has a place in life that only they can fill. With firsthand stories from her encounters with stars such as Oprah Winfrey and entrepreneurs such as Scott Olson (who developed Rollerblades at an early age), Joan described the kind of tenacity it takes to be successful.
Joan suggested that each person write out their "Definite Chief Aim" in life, and read that statement every day. She said that everyone must be willing to give something in return for what they want, and this must be included in the Definite Chief Aim statement. She read the statement that the famous martial artist Bruce Lee wrote.
INSTRUCTIONS for Creating Your Definite Chief Aim
Follow the format below as written by Bruce Lee and write your own Definite Chief Aim and
revise it as you are inspired to do. You can revise it from
time to time as you wish, but try not to be indecisive. Read
the statement out loud every morning when you get up and
every night right before you go to bed. Keep this private
and do not share this with other people. You will be
working with your subconscious mind and it is also helpful
to create a Treasure Map of visual images that represent your
Definite Chief Aim. You can clip images from magazines and paste them on a poster board. As you work this process, you will be
inspired with things to do to help you achieve your Definite
Chief Aim. You need to listen to your inner voice, your
intuition, and then follow through with action. It takes
time, determination, intense desire, focus and patience.

"I was at the awards event at Medtronic where you gave your speech and I absolutely loved your presentation! And I felt such a warmth and depth from you that was particularly touching to me. You project such life and soul into how you view your work and it was so inspiring. I liked so much that you give people ideas for their work and success, but encourage people to always hold the real values of life in their heart while doing it. Thank you." -- Cheryl Larson
