Prepare Your Vehicle for the 2022 Hurricane Season

The storm season officially starts on June 1 and runs through November 30. Experts are predicting slightly-above-normal storm activity for 2022 for the seventh year in a row.

The primary dangers that hurricanes pose for vehicles are high winds and water. Keeping the safety, needs, and wellbeing of the people with you in mind, here are ways to protect your vehicle and ensure it’s ready for you when you need it.

When storms are heading your way

• Stay informed of weather conditions.
• Follow local and federal shelter and evacuation instructions.
• Know your emergency evacuation route.

Before

• Fill the gas tank or charge the engine.
• Check the battery, wipers, and tires.
• Take photos of the vehicle’s interior and exterior as proof of its condition prior to storms.
• Store legal vehicle documents in a waterproof container.
• Store “ready” materials in your vehicle, including water, food, clothing, blankets, flashlights, roadside kits, printed maps, and electronics chargers.
• Close the windows and sunroof.

Best storage options

1. In a garage with no danger of stored objects falling on it.
2. Close to a building that offers protection from the wind.
3. On high ground away from tall trees, utility poles or power lines.

In all cases, place a cover on the vehicle if available.

• Check the condition of the vehicle. Take photos of any damage.
• Drive only if absolutely necessary. Do not drive through flooded areas. Watch for other dangerous conditions: downed trees and wires, floating or submerged debris, and damaged infrastructure.
