Strategic Fleet Management Is Sometimes Critical to Success

The importance of strategic procurement, professional fleet management, and intelligent route planning is illustrated by three recent examples from the press:

1. Route Planning

What happened: To use her official car at the VIP summit in Tyrol, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche had her chauffeur drive around 1,300 kilometers. She herself traveled by plane.

The consequences: Heavy criticism of the minister, who is supposed to stand for efficiency and frugality.

How strategic fleet management would have acted: Strategic fleet management avoids empty trips, especially in pragmatically organized utility fleets. Had the ministry followed standard fleet procedures, the limousine could have been used to transport other employees or for alternative purposes. It would also have been possible to rely on a suitable local service provider.
If the entire government fleet (approx. 250 vehicles) were digitally integrated and telematically managed, additional efficiency potential could be systematically realized.

2. Strategic Procurement

What happened: A social media post showed Heidi Reichinnek, chairwoman of the Left Party parliamentary group in the Bundestag, standing next to an Audi A8 luxury limousine.

The consequences: Public criticism of the parliamentary leader, who preaches modesty while traveling in a high-priced limousine.

How strategic fleet management would have acted: In strategic fleet management, for example with Holman Supply Chain, such a faux pas would not have occurred. We work with the client to determine the actual need. This may involve not only practical considerations such as vehicle features, efficiency, and procurement, but also public perception and employee motivation. In the above case, the wrong vehicle was procured for the right purpose.

3. E-Mobility

What happened: Finance Minister Marcus Optendrenk (CDU) swapped his electric official car for a combustion engine this year. Reason: “With a tight schedule and long drives through a large state like North Rhine-Westphalia, electric cars reach their limits,” Optendrenk said last year. The contract only expired this year.

The consequences: Everyday charging problems, limited flexibility, and a delayed vehicle replacement due to rigid contract structures.

How strategic fleet management would have acted: A mobility check would have identified practical challenges early and evaluated alternative scenarios. Flexible contract models, such as Holman FlexLease with adjustable terms or technology-neutral options, allow quick responses to changing requirements. Especially when switching to e-mobility, needs analysis, charging infrastructure planning, and contract flexibility are crucial to avoid poor decisions.

Strategic procurement, such as our Holman Supply Chain, can prevent poor decisions – even in utility fleets. We are happy to assist you with questions regarding procurement, fleet management and the strategic alignment of your mobility.
