Future Focus: Emerging Telematics Trends

Telematics and the insight it provides are among the most powerful resources in a fleet manager’s toolbox. The technology helps to deliver the visibility into fleet performance that you need to make the right decisions for your fleet – and your business. But what’s on the road ahead for this powerful technology?
In a recent article with Utility Fleet Professional, Holman’s Frank Daccardi discussed several emerging telematics trends and innovations that are poised to shape strategies in the years ahead. In the article, he highlighted how artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to influence telematics, noting that AI has the potential to enhance the insight telematics provides and the speed at which fleet operators can implement change.
Frank also shared why the addition of cameras to several telematics devices is among the most impactful advances in recent years, essentially putting fleet personnel in the vehicle with the driver.
“Fleet operators can monitor drivers for high-risk behaviors – distracted driving, speeding, etc. – and many devices can even provide alerts or coaching to improve performance in near real-time. Additionally, the footage captured by these units can help reduce liability for incidents when your driver is not at fault, providing valuable video evidence for potential litigation.”
Frank continued by examining how 5G connectivity is poised to add a number of innovative use cases to the telematics playbook as the technology becomes more widespread.
“5G connectivity is likely to enable applications and use cases that simply aren’t feasible today partially due to speed/bandwidth limitations. For example, the video feed could not only be used to monitor driver performance but also potentially used to assess the progress of a particular job to help optimize scheduling, routing, etc.”
To close out the article, Frank discussed the importance of prioritizing data security when implementing a telematics solution. Visit UtilityFleetProfessional.com to read the entire article.
