Key Consideration for Fleet Electrification

A news article "The Reality of Fleet Electrification"

Fleet electrification continues to gain momentum as a popular strategy for organizations looking to reduce their overall carbon footprint. While the transition to electric vehicles won’t happen overnight, many businesses are now ready to begin adding EVs to their fleet mix. However, this transition is far more complex than simply determining which EV models to order. Today, fleet electrification is influenced by a variety of factors — business requirements, vehicle specifications, operating parameters, charging infrastructure, etc.

Recently, Holman’s Director of Energy & Connectivity, Emily Graham, joined Modern WorkTruck Solutions to offer her insight on the fleet electrification journey. In the article, Emily shared that among the keys for a seamless transition to EVs is engaging the various stakeholders from across your business — procurement, operations, facilities, HR, etc. — and beginning the process with clearly defined goals. She also highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive charging solution.

“The reality is that your charging strategy is just as important — if not more so — as spec’ing and ordering the EVs themselves and you’ll need this solution in place before your first electric vehicles arrive.”

Emily also discussed several other factors to keep in mind when transitioning to EVs at scale, including charging asset management, driver training, and the reimbursement process for electricity costs drivers incur when charging their fleet vehicle at home. She also discussed a common challenge most fleet operators face given the current EV landscape.

“Perhaps the biggest challenge or misstep we see is taking a fragmented approach to fleet electrification. When the various aspects of fleet electrification — vehicle acquisition, charging strategy, infrastructure development, driver management, data integration, etc. — are siloed or decisions are made in a vacuum, the transition to EVs is awkward at best and often, significantly more costly and time consuming.”
