tech trends and impact on your fleet

Innovative technology continues to revolutionize how fleet operations are managed with trends such as electric vehicles (EV) and data analytics influencing your fleet strategy. What do these trends mean to your business and how do they carry your business forward?

Jeremy Dewey, Manager of EV Operations at Holman, recently spoke with Utility Fleet Professional on these trends and what you need to consider when deciding how to move your fleet operation forward. Speaking on the subject of EVs, Dewey noted that while it’s critical to begin your planning strategy to transition to electric vehicles, it’s just as critical to lay out how the infrastructure will impact your operation as well.

In the article Dewey states that an overreliance on public charging infrastructure could be a dangerous and costly proposition as drivers may find it challenging to find available chargers when they need one. “You have to look at the infrastructure for charging,” said Dewey. “Can the employee’s home accommodate the installation of a charging station?”

The article further highlights that many fleets are under pressure to reduce carbon emissions and implement other sustainability measures in the coming years. Dewey notes it will take time to develop a sound strategy based on real-life data and the need to develop a plan to adopt electric or alternative fuel vehicles to meet those goals.

“You have to start with a plan today because this is not an evolution, it’s a revolution,” Dewey states in the article. “Identify your goals and determine the incremental steps it will take to achieve those goals over the next three, five, 10 years. Transitioning to EVs and hybrids won’t happen overnight, so it is best to plan for a gradual transition over the course of multiple vehicle life cycles.”

The article further cautions on paralysis by analysis in regards to data analytics. Dewey discussed the temptation to resolve every problem, but instead advised to “work on incremental improvements.” Analytics can be very powerful when evaluating driver behavior, route optimization and unproductive idle time, to name a few points.

While trends may come and go, technology is always changing and it’s important to keep an inside track on how these changes impact your business. To read the entire article on how the recent trends in technology impact your fleet operation be sure to visit Utility Fleet Professional.
