Using Telematics with Trailers & Commercial Equipment
While telematics is an integral aspect of fleet management, the use of telematics for trailers and other commercial equipment is often overlooked. Yet it remains an incredibly valuable resource, especially for utility fleet operators. Recently, Holman’s Frank Daccardi joined Utility Fleet Professional to discuss trailer telematics and offered his insight on how the technology can help organizations enhance their operational efficiency.
In the article, Frank shared that location tracking is the most common use case for telematics on trailers and other equipment, highlighting why this is often a significant challenge for utility fleets.
“These commercial assets are often left at various locations, potentially for extended periods of time, so being able to know precisely where they are at all times is critical. This information can be especially useful for highly specialized assets that move from job site to job site frequently.”
Later in the article, Frank offered advice for fleet operators who are considering a telematics solutions but are unsure of how to get started.
“Determine which assets are most critical to your business and begin with those. You can then expand from there and even potentially explore other use cases.”
Frank concluded the article by discussing how the technology continues to evolve, including improved battery life and smaller devices that are easier to keep out of the way.
