Embracing the Potential of Telematics

The automotive sector is abuzz with a variety of new and emerging technologies (and the future is certainly bright) among them, telematics continues to be the engine that drives the fleet industry forward. This powerful technology delivers unsurpassed visibility into vehicle performance and driver behavior, empowering organizations to make better, data-driven decisions that maximize productivity, improve safety, and reduce operating costs.

That being said, determining how to get started with telematics can be intimidating. Recently, Holman’s Tony Candeloro and Frank Daccardi spoke with Autosphere to discuss how fleet operators can begin to introduce this powerful technology to their fleets. In the article, Tony and Frank share their perspectives on the potential of telematics and offer some advice to ensure you aren’t overwhelmed by the data and insight the technology delivers.

“It’s best practice to be very specific and targeted about what you want to do. For example, if you want to improve safety, rather than trying to think about every possible way that you’re going to achieve an end result, maybe you can start with a speeding campaign or a seatbelt campaign, and get everyone used to the fact that your company wants to improve safety. Focus on what you’re trying to accomplish, get comfortable with that, and then work towards the next goal.”

In the article, Tony also highlights how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) can further harness the visibility telematics provides.

“We’re using analytics to try to predict component failure based on diagnostic trouble codes. That’s a very tedious process that can be made more effective and efficient with the use of AI.”
