Leveraging Telematics Data to Drive Change

Telematics is a powerful resource that provides businesses unparalleled visibility into fleet performance. However, the success of any telematics program is determined by the speed at which you can effectively analyze data and implement change based on that information. That being said, every day, a typical fleet generates millions of data points – fuel transactions, maintenance records, licensing events, and more. Combine this information with telematics data – driver performance, vehicle location, routing, etc. – and it is easy to see how even a veteran fleet professional can struggle to process all of the data. And simply processing the data isn’t enough; you need knowledge and insight to fuel impactful decision making.

With that in mind, Holman’s Frank Daccardi and Ed Powell recently spoke with Fleet & Mobility to offer their recommendations for how fleet operators can effectively leverage telematics data to drive meaningful change. In the article, Frank noted that the “right” amount of telematics data to gather and monitor typically varies from one fleet to the next and he suggests letting your particular use case guide which metrics you measure.

“Determining the right amount of data begins with truly understanding what you are trying to achieve with your telematics solution. What is the outcome you’re striving for or challenge you’re trying to overcome? With that intent or goal clearly defined, you can then leverage telematics to measure and report on the key metrics associated with those aspects of your fleet.”

Frank also discussed the importance of remaining flexible since your priorities and use cases are likely going to change over time. Later in the article, Ed shared that while telematics provides a pipeline of valuable data, most fleet operators need a variety of tools and resources to make the data actionable.

“More often than not, this analysis far exceeds a fleet operator’s internal resources, and it is extremely beneficial to align with strong strategic partners who can help you maximize the potential of your telematics solution.”

Ed also highlighted that a strong fleet management partner should also serve as your solution provider, helping you uncover the “why” behind a particular challenge while also delivering recommendations for a better “how” for improvement.
