Preparing In-House Maintenance Facilities for EVs

As a growing number of companies add electric vehicles (EVs) to their fleet mix, fleet operators now find themselves adjusting their vehicle maintenance strategy to account for these units. For many vocational fleets, this also means preparing in-house maintenance facilities accordingly to ensure their technicians have the training, tools, and resources they need to properly (and safely) service EV units.

With that in mind, Holman’s Chris Foster recently spoke with Utility Fleet Professional to offer recommendations for fleet operators who are adapting their maintenance protocols for the unique needs of electric vehicles. In the article, Chris emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety when it comes to preparing in-house garages, noting that most technicians have received little to no training on complex, and rather dangerous, high-voltage systems.

“Without proper training and safety equipment, the high-voltage powertrain of an electric vehicle can present significant risks. Direct contact with the system by a technician or other employee can lead to serious injuries.”

Chris continued by highlighting the need for specialized training, tools, and personal protection equipment to ensure technicians are prepared to safely maintain electric vehicles. He provided a number of recommendations including the need for establishing a safety parameter as well as the need for insulating tools and equipment to minimize the risk of electrocution.

Chris also shared that while technicians with the proper training and safety precautions can conduct basic preventative maintenance at their in-house garage, fleet operators should leverage external OEM facilities for any repairs that involve an EVs’ high-voltage system.

“In most scenarios, it is more efficient – both in terms of cost and time – to have your in-house technicians prioritize PM services for your EV units and other repairs for your ICE vehicles while allowing outside resources to handle specialized EV maintenance.”
