Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to generate significant buzz across virtually all industries and the fleet sector certainly isn’t immune to the growing interest in the technology. While there is a tremendous amount of intrigue, there are also several questions about the current landscape of AI as well as what the future may hold for this powerful tool.

Recently, Holman’s Mike Stallone joined Utility Fleet Professional to highlight several emerging AI trends and examine how the technology is poised to impact fleet operations in the years ahead. In the article, he noted that there are several areas where AI is already helping organizations enhance their fleet operations, including route optimization, driver safety programs, and telematics.

“There are a tremendous number of places where AI is helping fleet managers know things that they would not have known 10 or 20 years ago.”

He then discussed how artificial intelligence may transform areas of fleet management such as maintenance by optimizing PM schedules or safety training by quickly identifying high-risk behavior. Mike also explained how AI will likely unlock creative solutions for common fleet challenges as the technology becomes more accessible, sharing one innovative use case by a fleet operator in the rail industry.

“They’ve put sensors on certain parts of their equipment and noticed that, with all that data that they’re receiving, that with heat and a certain number of vibration points, they can tell when certain parts of their equipment will fail. This predictive capability allows for incredibly precise maintenance scheduling, often catching potential issues before they lead to breakdowns.”

The article concludes with a reminder that while AI offers enticing potential, fleet operators need to proceed with caution and remember that AI tools should be leveraged to supplement human decision-making, not replace it. To read the entire article, please visit UtilityFleetProfessional.com.
