Alternative Fuel Options for Vocational Fleets

The landscape of alternative fuel options for vocational fleet operators continues to evolve as new options emerge and others become more viable. However, navigating the various options and determining the ideal solution for your fleet can be overwhelming for even the most veteran fleet professionals.

In a recent Utility Fleet Professional article, Holman’s Alternative Fuels and Emission Reduction Consultant Joe Korn offered a comprehensive overview of several alternative fuel options including renewable natural gas (RNG), renewable diesel, and hydrogen in an effort to help fleet professionals find the best fit for their business.

In the article, Joe noted that renewable diesel is a relatively simple transition for those fleets currently using diesel-powered vehicles, though renewable diesel costs more than conventional diesel fuel. Joe shared that while tailpipe emissions are about the same as regular diesel, renewable diesel has an overall lower carbon intensity score due to its renewable nature. Renewable diesel also presents minimal infrastructure hurdles since existing diesel fueling stations can easily accommodate a switch to a renewable blend.

When it comes to renewable natural gas, Joe explained that RNG is best suited for class 4 and class 5 cab and chassis applications equipped with gaseous prepped engines. RNG is about half the cost of conventional diesel fuel but can vary based on the volume of fuel a fleet consumes. However, as Joe highlighted, there are a number of important infrastructure considerations. For example, RNG fueling stations can be rather costly, particularly if a fleet’s operating parameters necessitate a fast-fill solution rather than a more standard overnight fueling option.

In terms of hydrogen, Joe shared that given the current cost and complexity, the value proposition simply isn’t there to make hydrogen a viable option for most fleets. The article concluded with Joe reminding fleet operators that the best alternative fuel choice will depend on the goals of the organization and how fleet vehicles are utilized.

“There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for choosing an alternative fuel but if you burn less conventional fuel and/or transition to an alt-fuel option, you’re likely to save money and lower emissions.”
