Video Telematics: Expanding the Telematics Playbook

Telematics, and the insight the technology provides, remains one of the most powerful tools in a fleet manager’s toolbox. And, with the recent addition of cameras to a number of telematics devices, the telematics playbook continues to expand and evolve. These sophisticated units allow fleet operators to capture footage of the vehicle in use (outbound) as well as footage of the driver behind the wheel, essentially putting you inside the vehicle.

Recently, Holman’s Frank Daccardi spoke with Autosphere to discuss the potential benefits of camera-enabled telematics devices and what you should keep in mind as you consider adding these units to your telematics strategy. In the article, Frank noted that most organizations can leverage video telematics in a number of use cases but cautioned that fleet operators should focus their efforts on a particular challenge or issue.

“Is there something you’re trying to uncover, change or identify? You need to understand the issue or the problem you’re trying to address, and once you do, you’ll be better able to identify where cameras need to be placed strategically so that you can get the best data and address the problem.”

Frank also highlighted a number of potential use cases for video telematics including monitoring drivers for high-risk behaviors and capturing accident footage that can reduce liability for incidents where your driver is not at fault. He concludes the article with advice for getting started with video telematics. Frank recommends establishing well-documented policies and procedures to ensure drivers are fully aware of performance expectations and potential repercussions.
