For over 100 years, Holman has operated under a simple belief: we’re not just in the automotive business, we’re in the people business. Everything we do is designed with our customers in mind, and it starts with investing in our own partners. This year alone we’ve dedicated more than 200 days to learning and development, empowering our employees with the tools, knowledge, and expertise to drive customer success.
A core area of our development this year has been enhancing the skill set of our Operations teams. Through tailored training in electric vehicles, Technical for Non-Technical (TNT) training, Operator Licence Awareness Training (OLAT), as well as training on a host of other topics from our rolling skills refresh programme to excel, we are positioning our team to stay ahead of industry developments and better serve the fleets in our care.
Electric Vehicle Expertise
Our Maintenance Controllers bring years of real-world experience from working in garages and workshops, providing a deep, practical understanding of vehicles. Over the past year, their expertise has helped customers save over £3.6 million in maintenance costs by negotiating discounts, preventing unnecessary repairs, and sourcing high-quality OEM parts at reduced rates.
But developments in technology bring new challenges, and our team recognised that we need to be prepared to meet the growing demand of customers with electric fleets. Dan Barnes, our Maintenance Control Team Leader with 14 years of technical experience, organised certified training for all the technicians in our Maintenance Control and Downtime Control teams, at our local training provider in Melksham.
The Level 2 certification programme covered both theory and hands-on practice. Learning about different types of electric and hybrid light vehicles, recent technological advances, and the critical risks and hazards associated with these vehicles. Followed by hands-on experience, working directly with EV components, learning how to safely perform service and repairs.
“The team are now confidently able to work with our vendors, spotting potential issues faster and providing our customers with cost-saving solutions before a problem escalates” – Dan Barnes.
With this training, our team is now well-prepared to support customers in navigating the complexities of electric fleets, with a deeper understanding of everything from driving patterns to regulatory requirements.
Technical for Non-technical Training
As the first point of contact for drivers, often during challenging situations, our Driver Support Team plays a critical role in delivering rapid and effective support. With many team members from non-technical backgrounds, they saw an opportunity to better support our customers by getting a deeper understanding into the mechanics of the vehicles systems, to be able to react more quickly and confidently.
To bridge this gap, Dan and the team came together to create a bespoke Technical for Non-Technical training programme. Designed in partnership with our training provider, this course brought our Driver Support team into the workshop. There, they learned to diagnose common vehicle issues with warning lights, brakes and tyres, across all vehicle types – from cars and vans, to trucks and trailers.
The impact of this training has been overwhelmingly positive. The team can now better support the driver through effective questioning to identify the potential root cause, fast – helping to significantly reduce repeat calls and wait times.
Operator Licence Awareness Training
Our Compliance Team works diligently every day to ensure that our customers’ fleets remain compliant and on the road. With vehicles becoming increasingly complex, the team saw the importance of keeping their knowledge comprehensive and up-to-date.
The Operator Licence Awareness Training (OLAT) delivered by Logistics UK, enhances the team’s transport legislation knowledge whilst providing them with a solid understanding of the latest standards. The training also covers future development in transport legislation ensuring that our Compliance team are ready for the future.
